Believe it or not, for a long time the Lazarettos were surrounded, and only partially, by a wall barely 80 centimeters high. It stretched from the Janissary Lazaretto to the spot you’re standing on right now.
Only by the decision of the Ragusan authorities in 1784, was it decided that the wall should be raised to the height of 2.30 meters, and from there a wall of the same height would be built. The new wall was supposed to stretch all the way to the emin’s house, so that the house stood outside the Lazaretto complex. And there was really no reason for the emin to live in the Lazarettos. In the end, the walls were erected, but the emin remained inside.
At the same time, the main Lazaretto gates were built. The gates were barred, and were high enough for a horse rider to pass under them. This means that the level of the Lazaretto square must have been lower in the past.
